Howdy folks,
while concepting, I found that putting the 50's twist on many of the objects was becoming problematic, so, to save myself some time---- and you too- I have compiled a bunch of 50's stuff to put through your mental filter while sketching.
Many of these objects would reflect a eutopia compared to our story, so the filtering will be quite extreme
(corroding chrome, torn clothes, etc.) but needless to say, this will be helpful for our endeavors.

The diners and hotels have very interesting silhoettes, so, its almost like they have been evyn earled (now he's a verb) already!
ReplyDeletehey, remi! just wanted to remind you that we're still in the forties!
ReplyDeleteThe fifties lean to something to more called atomic punk. Something that looked like a more space aged, sleek past. In the story the atomic bomb was never created.
O $%^&*()
ReplyDelete1 September 1939 – 2 September 1945
ReplyDeleteSince it was post ww2 I figured that this stuff would be relevant
The hair is pretty much the same - I checked
ReplyDeletethe concept cars are eerily similar in shape language, vents, and glass domes

men still wore suits and were depicted with the exact same face as the 50s peices (like the guy off mad men)
same phones
my bad on record players
diners were the same except no fun writing over the tops, and the curve of the roof= vertical instead of horizontal.
more greytones in the dresses, and less extravagent. (can someone else re compile a page for that?)
Haha, Yeah. I just don't want you to pick ref. you can't use. it's post ww2 but our version is altered. since the economy was ruined i don't image them advancing on their architectural styles. and older buildings would look more 1930s-ish (depending on how long it took to make. Newer modeled houses would look more 1940s style.
ReplyDeleteI'll put together some ref. but i would look at that shorpy site. it's been extremely helpful to me. plus it dates almost every picture.
If you could post your style guide to buildings of the 30s early 40s that would be great
ReplyDeleteYeah. I'll make a quick one for basic architectural stuff.Any preferences?
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see
ReplyDeletehotels (lol)
city shots
drug stores (really important)
hospitals
aaaaaand
factories
club/bookie joint/boxing ring if possible
Ok. Will do my best.
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind that most architecture post 1950s is fair game. There can be buildings from the 20's, 1900's, 1890s, etc. Good cities to look at are Chicago, Cleveland, and San Francisco.
